"A Slight Purpose" was recorded between 2005 - 2025, and brings together moments that found each other across time and great distances.

The album is a departure from recent recordings - having been constructed in the studio and featuring only Robert and Matt. Tracks were sent back and forth to construct songs, similar to the process Northern Valentine followed in the late 90's.

Like Northern Valentine's 2023 album, "The Infinite Bleed", synths and electronics take the lead on most songs - accompanied by samples, field recordings, and the occasional guitar.

As always - the album is best paired with your favorite headphones.

"08/07/08" was captured live on August 7th, 2008, in Greensboro, North Carolina. It was a shared moment that somehow still feels like it happened yesterday. Andrew Weathers, provides the best description of how this recording came to be:

"I came into underground music in the early aughts, a brief window when online tools were fostering connection without flooding the field with slop of various kinds. Still, what I was doing sat in between noise and ambient music and finding a place was challenging. One of those early connections for me was with Northern Valentine, the shifting constellation of friends and musicians orbiting around Robert Brown.

We played shows all around the Eastern seaboard together around 2008 - 2010. During that period, Robert visited me in Greensboro. After we played a show at the upstairs apartment that I had on Friendly Avenue, I took him to see the sights - including a parking garage under the county courthouse where I'd parked to go to court for a speeding ticket a few weeks before. In the early hours of the morning, we set up in the empty parking garage, found a working outlet, and made sound for nearly an hour. I was playing an amplified bicycle wheel and a pile of percussive objects, Robert brought his electric guitar. We expanded out, explored resonance, and drifted between the public and private.

Looking back at this recording 17 years later, I'm living a different life but I'm still the same man. We've both continued deepening our practices, but I've found myself on the East coast less often. Visiting the former self in this recording and, in the process, catching up with Robert has been gratifying. As always, connection is the point and music is the document."

"Northern Valentine // Live at Eastern State Penitentiary" was recorded during the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, on September 5th, 2009.

In the surveillance hub located at the center of the penitentiary, we screened our film, "Leopard's Mouth". As soon as the movie began, we created a live score for the film, featuring all of the songs from our album of the same name. The songs explore a range of emotions experienced by the film's protagonist, who experiences everything from familiar comforts to unsettled chaos during his journey.

Many thanks to everyone who attended - and special thanks to Eastern State Penitentiary for the honor of being invited to perform in such a unique and historic space. This performance was the first of four live screenings of the film, and we are thrilled to be able to preserve and share this recording!

This EP celebrates the 20th anniversary of Northern Valentine's 2005 album, "Leopard's Mouth", featuring two previously unreleased versions of the most frequently performed songs from the album - "The Desert Mile" and "Signal Fire".

Performing "The Desert Mile" with live drums quickly became a favorite way to realize the song. This version was recorded at Baresound One in 2008, in preparation for touring in Iceland. It was remixed in 2023 and still stands as a favorite way to recapture the emotion of performing the song live.

While on tour with Andrew Weathers and Jesse Beaman in 2008, a live performance was scheduled on WTPS-FM at the University of Pittsburgh. Part of the performance featured this version of "Signal Fire", with Andrew adding percussion and Jesse adding another layer of guitar.

When you have been living inside of a song and performing it a certain way for so long, it's always an incredible feeling to experience it moving in new directions.

Northern Valentine continues to explore spaces that exist in the moment, drifting between the meditative ambiance of drone and punctuated elements of post-rock.

"Displacer" features improvisations that were recorded in early 2025, along with a few older pieces that were recorded between 2006-2009. While the songs have a more raw and direct energy, which was typical of early live performances, there are elegant edges to each piece that become more apparent with each listen.

Each song is a moment that happened outside of time - a cathartic shout into the void that made everything feel lighter than it actually was.

As always - intended for listening with your favorite headphones.

This recording is the first in a Northern Valentine occasional series of recordings, called "The Stylus" - which focuses on musical interpretations of poems, stories, novels, and other written works.

It is also a long overdue tribute to Edgar Allan Poe. In 2009, Northern Valentine began using various methods to convert text from Poe's works into musical notes. Every sound presented here originates from a line of text in one of Poe's works - with the exception of some bird calls from a few cooperative ravens in the woods. Each piece was created entirely by one person, making this recording both an individual and a group project.

Amy begins with Poe's last completed poem, "Annabel Lee", which explores the theme of the death of a beautiful woman. Matt recounts "The Balloon Hoax", a newspaper article that presented the true story of Monck Mason's trip across the Atlantic Ocean in a gas balloon - which was later revealed to be false. Ben visits "The City in the Sea", a poem that tells the tale of a city ruled by a personification of Death. Jeffrey delves into "Alone", a poem about isolation and a sense of disconnect from humanity. Robert closes out this volume by getting lost in the depths of "The Raven", Poe's often revisited narrative poem about a distraught lover who is visited by a mysterious talking bird.

Grab your headphones so you don't miss the little nuances within each piece. All of the sounds are intentional and serve a purpose - as you take a journey that wouldn't be possible without one of the greatest writers to ever explore the darkness.

This three song Ep is perfect for late night listening - celebrating the transition of moods and changes in the season.

"Silver Thread" has experienced many incarnations at live performances over the years, but this version is the original from 2006. "Eidolon" and "Howl" both originated from the same haunted recording session at Baresound One and were intended to travel different paths - until they finally ended up coming together here.

They are best enjoyed in darkness, with you favorite headphones.

This album highlights some of Northern Valentine's favorite live moments that were captured on tour and in the studio, between 2007-2012, while revisiting some of their favorite songs to perform.

It features live and reimagined versions of songs, most of which appear in another form on previous recordings, including "Pictures From The Lake", "Leopard's Mouth", "The Distance Brings Us Closer", "Fin de siècle", and "Ribbons".

Four of the songs ("Wings Over The Sun", "The Desert Mile", "White Mountains", and "Thousand Eyes") were recorded during time spent exploring sound together in the studio. They offer glimpses at some of the different paths these songs have traveled over the years.

"Signal Fire" is the oldest live recording on the album, dating back to a house show in Washington, DC, in 2007. "Born Yesterday / Release" was recorded live in Philadelphia in 2009, and features long time collaborator, Ben Fleury-Steiner. "Fin de siècle" was recorded live in Philadelphia, at the 2012 record release show for the album of the same title. "Night Bloom" was recorded live in Huguenot, NY, as part of Electro-Music Fest 2011.

Closing out the album are two songs that may not be as well known, though they have always been favorites of the group. "I Will Cover My Tracks" has been performed live a number of times, but was never before released in any version or format. This version of the song was recorded live in 2008 in Philadelphia. "Adrift" was recorded live in Carlisle, PA, while on tour in 2008. It was previously only available in Iceland, on a long out-of-print tour CD.

If there is one common theme that runs throughout, it is this - regardless of how many times Northern Valentine may perform certain songs, they will always sound a bit different from the last time you heard them.
