Northern Valentine presents
"Rusted Gates, Volume 1 - Leopard's Mouth"
a multimedia performance of film, music and sound art
Saturday, September 5, 2009 Saturday, September 12, 2009
In September 2009, we debuted our first multimedia performance, entitled "Rusted Gates,
Volume 1 - Leopard's Mouth", as part of the 2009 Philly Fringe Festival.
The performance consists of an original film (appropriately titled "Leopard's Mouth") that we have produced,
and original, improvisational music and sound art, which we perform as a live soundtrack for the film.
Eastern State Penitentiary hosted our first performance on Saturday, September 5th, 2009 at 8:30 pm, and
The First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia hosted us in their small chapel on the following Saturday, September 12th, 2009, at 5:30 pm and 8:30 pm.
"Leopard's Mouth" is our first film and it is a companion piece for our album of
the same title, which was re-released by Ben Fleury-Steiner on Gears of Sand Recordings in 2008.
The story focuses on a young man, named Leopard, who is committed to a sanitarium.
Leopard sinks deeper into his surroundings and comes to embrace his new environment, where he becomes
interested in a young nurse at the facility. He delves deep into his mind, where he creates a more
favorable reality that, at first, offers an escape, but soon turns against him as the
world outside his mind keeps seeping into his fantasy. The film chronicles the journey through Leopard's
delusions and reality as he struggles to regain purpose and meaning.

We are putting the finishing touches on "Rusted Gates :: Volume 2", as well as a yet unnamed digital download release, both of which will be finished this year.
Some of our previous releases are now out of print, with plans to re-release some of our back catalog through other record labels.
We are also working on material for collaboration releases with Yellow6, My Empty Phantom, Zac Keiller and Andrew Weathers.
Press and Reviews
We are excited to report that our debut record on Silber Records, The Distance Brings Us Closer, has been reviewed by a host of
zines / people / websites, including Terrascope Online, Billboard / AllMusic, Foxy Digitalis and The Silent Ballet (just to name a few)!
(...we will also have copies of recordings available at our live shows...)
October 2008 - Residency in Philadelphia
During the month of October 2008, we were in residency at The Fire, located at 412 Girard Avenue, Philadelphia, PA.
We played every Tuesday night (October 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th) with some of our local friends and a few out of town bands.
These shows celebrated the cd release of our new album, "The Distance Brings Us Closer", on Silber Records.
Our new record is full of droning goodness and the shows were a blend of improvised and themed material.
We were in Iceland from June 8th-12th, playing with our friends, For a Minor Reflection.
We played four shows in and around downtown Reykjavík, including Organ on June 10th, Kaffi Hljómalind on June 11th, Glætan bókakaffi on June 12th,
and a show on the island of Viðey, on June 8th, at Viðeyjarkirkja, a church (pictured below on the left) that was consecrated in 1774 and is the second oldest one still standing in Iceland!
Pictures and comments from the tour will be posted sometime soon...once we adjust to not being in the midnight sun!
Before we headed to Iceland, we were asked to play a show on May 26th, at Tritone (in Philadephia) to open a screening of the Sigur Rós documentary, "Heima"
Leopard's Mouth re-released in limited run
Leopard's Mouth, the first cd-r in our field recording series, Rusted Gates, has been re-released on Gears of Sand Recordings in a limited run,
with special packaging done by Matt Borghi of the Hand Work Press. It is limited to 100 hand numbered copies and all of the text and images on the recycled, chipboard sleeves were created using hand engraved dies and a genuine letter press.
We are back from our tour with For a Minor Reflection.
They came over from Reykjavík, Iceland for their first US tour and we had a blast with them...we miss them already.
Not only did we get to rock the stage and hang out into the early morning hours with them, but we learned more about Icelandic culture and language along the way,
including many great pick up lines and nice names to call people!
We played at some of our favorite places, as well as some new places, and met a lot of great people along the way.
Thanks to everyone who let us play at their place, all of the bands who played with us and/or let us crash at their place,
and Dickinson College, for having great 'fort building' furniture.
The 2nd installment of our 5 disc series of field recordings and improvisations will be ready for release in 2009.
It is called "A Faint Light Still Glows", and it includes music and material from 1977-2008; including stuff from our childhood years,
as well as public sessions in Virginia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia...and out in middle of the international waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
More information will be posted once it's ready!
QRD Interview
As part of a Valentine's Day series of interviews with couples in bands, we (Robert and Amy) were interviewed for issue # 36 of
QRD. We're featured alongside of interviews of other band couples
(Windy and Carl, Low, Lycia, Rollerball and more).
Thanks to everyone who came out in support of local and touring music as we hit the road with some great shows that
bridged the gap from 2007-2008. A very special 'thank you' to Jeff for joining in our merry band and rocking out on the road with us (great things to come with Jeff on board!)
And a very special 'thank you' to our tour-mates, Aydin,
for coming out from Pittsburgh to rock NYC, Philly and Charlottesville with us. We love Aydin! Incredible sounds from an incredible group of people!
From rocking the shows to hanging out, jamming, and all the in-between...Aydin put Pittsburgh on the map!
Thanks also to:
the original 'weapons of mass distraction'...The Graboids for playing with us at the end of December on two shows...
Mammoth Hunter and Florida=Death for being our introduction to great music and great people in Connecticut...
Goodbye Blue Monday and Millions for a great show in NYC...
Radio Eris for hosting an impromptu jam session/concert...Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar for everything under the sun (we love that place)...
Ben Fleury-Steiner for inspiring us to further let go and 'just be' (see below)...and Pacific Before Tiger for showing once again that
if you play quietly, people will listen...beautiful music Andrew!
